Eve’s Diary

Monday

When I first opened my eyes I heard a Voice. It told me I was one of Its ribs. I looked in the water in this Garden, but even I know I look more like It than a rib, though what a rib looks like I am not sure.

The Voice said that I was a woman and It a man, but what this means I do not know.

The Voice told me to name things, so I went through this lovely Garden, I must name this Garden, and named all that I saw. I named the fast runners Horses, and the striped ones like them Zebras, and the ones with short, stubby horns Cows, and those with long branched horns are Deer. The laughing ones I call Hyenas. I shall not write all the new names now, but I have told the man and I shall remember them.

Tuesday

The first dark words, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are also those I made for the Voice’s days. Sunday is Holy as He decreed.

The man is called Adam, and I, Eve.

Wednesday

I have been thinking. After looking in the water I look more like Adam than Tiger, Tree, Bear, or Wolf, but he is big, and thinks very much of himself. His fur is short and ragged on top of his head, mine long and shining. He thinks he is very strong and is proud. He says woman should be quiet and obey man (where he learned this I do not know, as the Voice says we are equal).

Adam says there are male of each of my named ones, and female ones, too. Adam says the female creatures obey the male creatures, but that is not right; they are all equal. Adam says he is the master of everything, above All except the Voice, whom he calls God. Adam says that I am mistress of everything, but he is master of me.

Thursday

I have found a nice and pretty name for this Garden: the Garden of Eden.

I told Adam he should visit the water, but he thinks too highly of himself to take my advice, believes himself above me, so I shall not advise him any longer.

Friday

A beautiful tree was found! Beautiful fruits are on its divine branches. Adam says I did not find it, that God told him that we must never touch its fruit, or terrible things will happen. The Voice should have told me as well as him.

I won’t touch the fruit, though it looks more delicious than anything. I shall simply visit the tree every day.

Saturday

A Snake told me the fruit would not harm me and I should try some, but Adam says NO, him and his arrogant snootiness.

Sunday

Adam rests today, as we do every day, but this Holy day he will not leave our shelter. I go to visit the Snake and try the fruit. Adam told me not to go, but he shall not command me. Besides, what he does not know will not hurt him.

The fruits do look wonderful and delicious, I wonder if they taste as good as they look…
